Direct connection to the facts

Bert Simons of Rotterdam has found a way to always surround himself with friends- make them out of paper! Using a computer program, he made 3-D images of himself and his friends and then flattened the images, printed them out and assembled them into extremely realistic paper sculptures. Despite the natural impossibility, scientists working for a Japanese whisky company have figured out how to grow blue roses. To achieve this, they had to implant a blue pigment gene from pansies into the roses. They hope to begin sales in 2009 of the new flower.

Japan’s annual Crying Sumo contest is upon us again. Every year, newborns are taken to a temple to compete. This year, 84 babies were brought in to be lifted in the air by amateur sumo wrestlers. The babies are paired off and the first to cry wins. If both babies cry, then the winner is the one who cried loudest. The contest is a tradition that is meant to pray for the child’s healthy growth.
A doggy fashion show in the Philippines produced this tiny four-legged scuba suit. Mondex the Chihuahua won first place for this miniature suit, air tank, flippers and goggles.


A common pairing- chocolate and wine- have been put together for an award winning dessert: chocolate wine. Heston Blumenthal, owner of the restaurant The Fat Duck, is known for his unusual pairings. Other “Frankenstein foods” include eggs and bacon ice cream and salmon poached in licorice gel.
